Mr. Green observes

Dominic Green is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Mr. Green examined the documentary evidence bearing on Ilhan Omar’s marriage to her brother in the pseudonymous Spectator column “‘I am legally married to one and culturally to another’: How Ilhan Omar desperately tried to shut down accusations of bigamy amid claims she was briefly married to her BROTHER to ‘commit immigration fraud’ while she was still with her current husband.” Everything he writes is worth reading.

In the weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal he observes that “The global intifada has arrived in England.” Commenting on the Yom Kippur attack on British Jews at worship by a man named Jihad, he writes:

Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack triggered a multifront global campaign against the Jewish people. Left-Muslim mobs called for the destruction of Israel as a racist and colonialist state. The captured institutions of international law manufactured lies to undermine the legitimacy of the Jewish state. The activists of academia and media, notably state broadcasters such as BBC, amplified this information war by laundering Hamas propaganda about massacres, “genocide” and “famine” in Gaza. On social media especially, the anti-Israel campaign blurred the line between Jews and Israelis. In Britain, the number of assaults on Jews and Jewish property reached record levels.

While police stood by, Labour leaders accused the Jewish state of unique perfidy. In July, Prime Minister Keir Starmer accused Israel of perpetrating an “unspeakable and indefensible” humanitarian “catastrophe.” On Sept. 17, Mayor Sadiq Khan of London accused Israel of “genocide.” On Sept. 21, Mr. Starmer recognized the fictitious state of Palestine, a gesture acclaimed by Hamas as a “victory” and condemned by President Trump as a reward for terrorism. On Sept. 29, the delegates at Labour’s annual conference endorsed the “genocide” libel and called for sanctions against Israel.

The core lesson of post-1945 civics in the West is that we must act to prevent genocide and racism. When Britain’s government and media promoted lies about the Jewish state, they gave a moral imprimatur to action against Jews everywhere. The British media that now decry the Manchester killings spread bogus pictures to accuse Israel of starving Palestinian babies. The Labour politicians who offer “thoughts and prayers” pandered to endemic antisemitism among British Muslims and the radical left. The police who promise extra protection ignored pleas from Jewish communal leaders as anti-Jewish assaults and vandalism reached record levels.

Closer to home (our home, anyway), Green observes of the conservative movement in the United States:

The Old Right had a racist streak as broad as Huey Long. To shape movement conservatism in the 20th century, William F. Buckley broke with Robert Welch Jr. and the Birchers and later fired Joseph Sobran. If there is to be a movement conservatism for the 21st century, the New Right must break with Tucker Carlson, Nick Fuentes, Candace Owens, and the chorus of clickbait Charles Coughlins who blame the Jews for America’s troubles. Their mind map has already caused moral brain death in the left lobe, and it is bleeding into the right lobe.

That is the conclusion of his September 12 Examiner column “Mr. Green goes to Washington.”
