America at a Crossroads

Celebration of America’s 250th anniversary has been, I think, muted. President Trump has tried to clean up Washington, D.C., for the occasion, and has sponsored various festivities. But Democrats have actively opposed his cleanup efforts, so we have the absurd spectacle of Democrats cheering on the algae in the Reflecting Pool. And they have largely boycotted the celebrations.

Many have compared the enthusiasm and good cheer with which our Bicentennial was celebrated in 1976–actually a relatively dark moment in our history–with this year’s more modest festivities. The difference, I think, is that the Democratic Party is now actively and openly anti-American.

Sadly, our 250th anniversary has been marked by electoral wins on the part of Communists and anti-Semites. If you think my indictment of the Democrats overstates the case, consider this Independence Day address by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Put aside, for the moment, the fact that Mamdani apparently doesn’t know how to sit at a desk. It reeks of hatred for the United States:

America is at a crossroads, the most critical, in my opinion, since 1861. Never before have we had a major party dedicated to the overthrow of our constitutional system and of our founding principles. And that party commands the loyalty of something approaching half of our people.

Whether the Republic can survive the current crisis intact remains to be seen.
