I wrote “Obama, Joe the Plumber and the gospel of envy” for the Christian Science Monitor when Joe the Plumber emerged in the course of the campaign in the fall of 2008. I also wrote about him in “Hey, Joe” when he became the center of attention in one of the Obama-McCain debates. It’s been a while since we heard from Joe.
The Hill’s Blog Briefing Room reports today on Joe the Plumber’s alienation from Senator McCain and, derivatively, Governor Palin. Most of interest to me, however, is Joe’s (limited) praise of Barack Obama: “I think his ideology is un-American, but he’s one of the more honest politicians. At least he told us what he wanted to do.”
During the campaign Obama did a brilliant job of impersonating a pragmatic man of the middle, but Joe has a point. Given the substantial evidence to the contrary, it took a lot of wishful thinking to believe it.
