After firing thousands of rockets that forced the depopulation of much of northern Israel, Hezbollah has been devastated by Israel’s counterattacks. But if down, Hezbollah and its sponsor Iran are not quite out. Earlier today, they tried to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu:
A drone fired by Hezbollah from Lebanon that exploded in the central seaside town of Caesarea early on Saturday targeted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s private home, his office said.
The premier and his wife were not present and no injuries were reported.
Apparently the location of Netanyahu’s home is not a state secret. (Caesarea, by the way, is a fantastic place, if you haven’t been there.) Damage to the house is described as “superficial.” One can only assume that Israeli security precautions for their Prime Minister are robust. Still, it is not clear why this drone, one of three launched by Hezbollah, made it as far as Netanyahu’s home. The other two were shot down.
Candidly, I can’t blame the Iranians for trying. The leadership of Hamas and Hezbollah is pretty much all dead, and Iran’s mullahs no doubt worry that they may be next. This attempt to assassinate Israel’s Prime Minister was no doubt foreseen long ago. Israel is engaged in a long-overdue struggle to the death, and it is doing very well. Israelis are determined to fight on to decisive victory, and I don’t think they would be deterred even by a successful assassination attempt, let alone the feeble one we saw yesterday.
