Inver Grove Heights Man Sentenced to 54 Months’ Imprisonment for Being a Felon in Possession of Stolen Firearms
The headline undersells the case,
According to court documents, on January 14, 2026, Gutierrez participated in a violent civil disturbance in Minneapolis where he and others broke into a vehicle belonging to the FBI.
The occasion was an anti-ICE riot. Gutierrez and a confederate took advantage of the chaos to steal a rifle and ammunition from the FBI, who were participating in crowd control as local police wouldn’t lift a finger.
Your correspondent was there for the sentencing hearing today.
In fact, I was the the only member of the local media attending in person, although they all have dutifully filed reports based on the press release.
With a long rap sheet, including felony convictions for domestic violence and other offences, Gutierrez was looking at 8 to 11 years in this latest federal case.
Prosecutors generously offered the eight years. The defense requested three years, citing among other factors, the difficult childhood that Gutierrez suffered…somewhere on planet Earth.
Now billed out of suburban Inver Grove Heights (MN), the Gutierrez origin story is now a state secret, the judge having ordered all documents with background information to be sealed for 20 years. I’m not kidding.
District Judge John Tunheim relied heavity on the Gutierrez sob story in handing down a relatively light sentence of 4-and-a-half years in prison. And he owes the FBI resitution of $4,000. But where Gutierrez is from and what he has suffered in his 33 years, you, the public, aren’t allowed to know.
Gutierrez’ membership in the Latin Kings street gang was mentioned a couple of times this afternoon, but no one seemed to want to make a big deal about it. In the view of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, his gang membership is only “suspected,”

So you see, it is really all Trump’s fault, in the end.
Gutierrez’ chief accomplice is scheduled to be sentenced in late October.
