Explaining the Mar-a-Lago Raid [Updated]

Featured image Thursday evening, I was on the US Report on Sky News Australia, talking about the FBI’s raid on Donald Trump’s home. The host was James Morrow, who also co-hosts the excellent Outsiders show. In addition to the raid, we briefly discussed the Democrats’ grotesque expansion of the IRS, which, apparently but unaccountably, they expect to be popular. You can go here to view the segment, which is six and a »

Andrew McCarthy comments

Featured image With the exception of Andrew McCarthy’s NRO posts and columns, the written commentary on the raid on Mar-a-Lago has been wanting. Today he devotes his weekly NRO column (behind the NRO paywall) to the unsealed search warrant. Andy wrote me this morning in response to my notes on the warrant. I am grateful to be able to add his comments to the mix. With his permission I’m posting his message »

Notes on the Trump warrant

Featured image Earlier this week I offered “Notes on the Trump raid.” I want to offer a few tentative notes on the Mar-a-Lago search warrant/receipt unsealed in slightly redacted form yesterday. Mr. Techno Fog, Esq., has posted the documents with his own observations here. The Wall Street Journal has separately posted the search warrant/receipt here. I want to tune out the noise — Merrick Garland’s fatuous four-minute public statement, the ensuing Department »

Code Red for the Deep State?

Featured image Moviegoers may recall the scene late in Return of the Jedi where the rebel fleet transmits a stolen security code to get through the defensive perimeter surrounding the new death star, and the communications officer on the imperial battle cruiser says, “It’s an old code, but it checks out.” This line came back to mind with the news this morning that one of the items supposedly sought in the Mar-a-Lago »

Observations on the Mar-a-Lago Raid

Featured image There is much to be said about the FBI’s raid on Donald Trump’s home. I won’t try to say it all here. These are a few observations, based on what we know currently: * To get a search warrant, you have to identify a crime that has been committed, and explain how evidence you are looking for is relevant to that crime. At this point, we don’t know what purported »

Notes on the Trump raid

Featured image What do we know? Law enforcement leaks and confirmation from the Trump side indicate that the FBI raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence indicate that the search was focused on presidential records and the possible violation of the Presidential Records Act. In her inside account of the raid, Miranda Devine puts it this way: “The Post has learned that the search warrant used by the FBI to enter the palatial Palm »

A simple desultory philippic

Featured image With the FBI raid and New York Times write-up by Maggie Haberman, Ben Protess, and Adam Goldman, President Trump was James O’Keefed yesterday. O’Keefe was raided, humiliated, and Times’d over Ashley Biden’s diary. The government is out to get him. So it is with President Trump, right down to the Times coordination with the national security establishment (“according to multiple people familiar with the investigation”). Thinking that Trump had been »

In re Blue Grand Jury: 8 points

Featured image I reported on Judge Schiltz’s In re Blue Grand Jury investigation final order yesterday morning as soon as it was released. A copy of the final order is appended to my linked post. The massive investigation described in the order was triggered in part by an illegal leak of grand jury information to the Star Tribune regarding the prospective federal indictment of Derek Chauvin et al. following Chauvin’s state-court murder »

In re Blue Grand Jury: Perps remain at large

Featured image Judge Patrick Schiltz (my friend and now chief judge of the Minnesota federal district court) has filed a public order concluding his investigation into the illegal leaks of secret grand jury information preceding the indictment of Derek Chauvin by the Biden Justice Department (embedded below). The leaks formed the basis of stories reported in the New York Times and the Star Tribune. Readers may recall that we have followed the »

Beyond the Eastman memo

Featured image John Eastman counseled President Trump in the aftermath of the 2020 election. I have commented critically on his contribution to the events of January 6 previously, but today I want to draw attention to his close encounter with the FBI last week. Tucker Carlson included the video in his brief segment with John last night. It is chilling. Our increasingly totalitarian government seems to have adopted the infamous mantra of »

The O’Keefe Project: Unseal me here

Featured image I’ve followed the government’s investigation of James O’Keefe and Ashley Biden’s diary since the New York Times broke the story with a little help from its friends in the national security establishment. What did O’Keefe do wrong? What makes it a federal case? This much is clear to me: the Biden Justice Department is out to get James O’Keefe. Pending before the court that signed off on the search warrants »

At the Mattis plea hearing

Featured image Defendants Colinford Mattis and Urooj Rahman arrived at a plea agreement with the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York to resolve charges deriving from their participation in the New York edition of the George Floyd riots, this one involving the distribution of Molotov cocktails to the crowd. Indeed, Rahman tossed one of the Molotov cocktails into a police car. On October 20, 2021, Judge Brian Cogan »

How the left learned to stop worrying…

Featured image …and love domestic terrorism. That is the heading of the Washington Free Beacon editorial addressing the latest Biden Department of Justice outrage. Readers of a certain age may recall the classic movie from which it derives: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. The Beacon editorial comments on a story that deserves wider attention. I am taking the liberty of posting it below the »

FBI Investigated Concerned Parents

Featured image You all remember the story: the Biden Department of Justice coordinated with the National School Boards Association to arrange for FBI investigations of parents who are unhappy about their local schools teaching racism and anti-Americanism (Critical Race Theory) and gender confusion, and requiring masks. The episode was so sordid that many state school board associations dropped their affiliation with NSBA, and most people doubted that the FBI would be craven »

Silence of the WH(ams), cont’d

Featured image Yesterday I noted that the thugs threatening Supreme Court justices at their homes this week seem to be an instrument of the Democratic Party. Last week I observed “The silence of the WH(ams)” — the White House and its media adjunct — regarding the thugs. Andrew McCarthy adds that their conduct violates federal criminal law, but that the Department of Justice remains inert on this point. Yesterday’s White House briefing »

The unmasking appealed

Featured image My only comment on Judge Mizelle’s decision on the illegality of the CDC mask mandate was this. I predicted that the Biden administration would appeal it despite whatever ambivalence it might feel about the ruling. They would find the urge to vindicate the regulation’s expression of the health authorities’ will to power irresistible, if only because of the possible spillover effect. And so it has come to pass. Axios reports »

The O’Keefe Project: Tucker Carlson edition

Featured image We haven’t heard anything about developments in the government’s persecution of Project Veritas in the matter of Ashley Biden’s diary since I wrote about the case last month. All my posts tracking the story are accessible here. I find the story chilling and do not want to let it recede from sight. Harmeet Dhillon is one of the Project Veritas attorneys lending a hand in the case. She appeared last »
