The deal this time

President Biden has claimed credit for the ceasefire/hostage deal announced yesterday. So has President Trump. The AP notes the competition for the bragging rights here. However, even Biden State Department spokesman Matthew Miller credited Trump. Miller commented: “The involvement of President-elect Trump’s team has been absolutely critical in getting this deal over the line.”

The deal must be doubleplusgood! Doubt must be wrongthink.

The Times of Israel has posted the full text of the deal at the link. Or the no deal. As I write this morning, the Times of Israel headline reports that “PM’s office claims Hamas backing out of some agreements, delays cabinet vote on deal.” One suspects that the kinks will be worked out.

Israel is to pay an enormous and I would say humiliating price for hostages and corpses. Hamas is to survive. Liel Leibovitz assesses the deal based on what is now known in this New York Post column. He writes: “[I]t is very hard to observe this deal and see it as anything other than an utter and complete disgrace — and an embarrassment for America.”

Senator Tom Cotton gave President Biden full credit for the deal. Maybe he has changed his mind about the merits of the deal. Maybe not. Maybe Israel’s goals of crushing Hamas and getting the hostages/corpses back are irreconcilable. However, I think he has a point.
