Democrats and the mainstream media are attacking Jeff Sessions over his two meetings with the Russian ambassador last year. Scott has the story.
Sen Claire McCaskill joined the pile-on party by tweeting: “I’ve been on the Armed Services Com for 10 years. No call or meeting w/ Russian ambassador. Ever. Ambassadors call members of Foreign Rel Com.” (Emphasis added)
McCaskill was trying to undermine any suggestion that Sessions’ two meetings were in connection with his role as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. She wants to advance the narrative that the meetings must have been part of a joint Trump-Russian effort to defeat Hillary Clinton.
There’s a problem though. McCaskill’s own tweets show that she has met and talked on the phone with the Russian ambassador. On January 30, 2013, she tweeted: “Off to meeting w/Russian ambassador. Upset about the arbitrary/cruel decision to end all US adoptions, even those in process.”
And on August 15, 2015, she tweeted: “Today calls with British, Russian, and German Ambassadors re: Iran deal.”
I understand that McCaskill desperately wants to appease left-wing Democrats so as to avoid a serious primary challenge in 2018. But that quest should not carry with it a disregard for the truth as blatant as that exhibited in her anti-Sessions tweet.
