Reader Jim Melcher asked us earlier this week to direct our attention to the Minneapolis production of the opera based on Margaret Atwood’s novel The Handmaid’s Tale. I can’t tell Margaret Atwood from Margaret Drabble, and the pain involved in paying attention to the opera was well above my threshold for pain. Thankfully, Deacon volunteered to man the Power Line culture desk to cover the opera.
For readers who may now be inspired to follow Atwood’s carreer, it should be noted that tomorrow’s Sunday Times Book Review includes a review of Atwood’s new novel, Oryx and Crake, a book that sounds unreadable even in the summary form provided by the review: “Present at the re-creation.” We will be assigning Deacon to cover the opera version of Oryx and Crake.
