Lou Harvin, public affairs director for the Democratic members of the Minnesota House of Representatives, caused a minor furor by alleging, in a local black newspaper, that Republicans in the legislature are “of the KKK mentality.” Acknowledging that Republicans do not lynch Negroes, Harvin explained that Republicans are like the Klan because they “lie, lie, lie.” Harvin apologized for his remarks after they were criticized by legislators.
The Star Tribune story gave no clue as to the Klan-like “lies” referred to by Harvin, so I looked up the original story in the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder. Here is what Harvin, a high-ranking employee of the Democratic Party, said:
