The Minnesota Twins are in a race for a divisional championship in the American League Central. All their good players are hurting, but first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz has been playing virtually all year with pain in a wrist that will require surgery in the off-season. The guy is an artist in the field and an absolute throwback to the gamers of old. Since the All Star break he’s caught fire offensively in tandem with the addition of Shannon Stewart to the lineup. In the photograph below, you can see that he bats without batting gloves and keeps his helmet coated with pine tar. Jim Souhan has an admiring portrait in today’s Minneapolis Star Tribune: “For every ache there comes a hit.”
