Greetings From Washington

I’m in Washington DC, as is the Trunk. (Deacon lives here, of course.) So last night we had one of our rare editorial board meetings. A good time was had by all, but no decisions were made. We are, in fact, in the midst of a transition; our site designer is re-designing the site (don’t worry, nothing too drastic), and we’re planning to move to new software at the same time, probably in the next week or so.
This afternoon I’m participating in a “debate” on new media vs. old at the Online Politics conference at George Washington University. I’m on the “new media” team. I think it’s going to be pretty much a free for all. The big news here seems to be the FEC and the prospect of blog-regulation, which, of course, is highly unpopular with bloggers of all stripes. It’s a rare occasion for left-right cooperation. We’ve talked about this a little, but not too much; my own view is that there is no way the FEC is going to try to put a value on bloggers’ links and endorsements and shoe-horn them into the McCain-Feingold regulations. Admittedly, though, I haven’t studied the matter much. The FEC is administering a blatantly unconstitutional system, I think, and I doubt that they want to push their regime past the point of absurdity for fear the whole edifice will come crashing down. Which, of course, is what I would like to see happen.
