Democracy Project looks at the controversy generated by the exposure by Sean Treglia, a former program officer at the Pew Charitable Trust, of Pew’s role in the passage of the “McCain-Feingold” Act. The response of defenders of McCain-Feingold has been to accuse Treglia of wildly exaggerating Pew’s role. However, Democracy Project points us to a piece by Thomas Mann of the Brookings Institution that confirms the “pivotal” nature of Pugh’s efforts. Mann’s piece also provides a glimpse at the road-map of those who wish to seize control of the campaign process and “protect” democracy from itself. This clearly is an ongoing struggle, and one in which Pew helped bring about a significant victory for the “wise mean who disapprove of political speech they can’t control.”
