Another One Bites the Dust

Another Democratic Presidential candidate, that is, as Russ Feingold announced that he will not seek the nomination. This is a bigger story than some might realize, as Feingold is very popular with the Dems’ activist base, and, if I’m not mistaken, was the only candidate who voted against the Iraq war.
As we look toward 2008, Republican hopes are buoyed by the fact that the Democrats don’t yet have a plausible candidate other than Hillary Clinton–and, for reasons I’ve outlined before, I don’t think she can win. The only Democrat left in the pack who has a modicum of name recognition and, in my view, has a reasonable chance of winning is Evan Bayh. But he and other candidates who are currently second-tier need to raise a lot of money, and garner a lot of name-recognition. It is by no means too late, but the clock is ticking.
