Everton defeated Fulham 4-1 yesterday and now are in sixth place. With only six matches left, we have a decent shot at playing in European competition next year. And since our goal difference the fifth best in the league, we’re not a false position.
Four goals in a match is a rare accomplishment for Everton. The only other time we did it this year was in a cup match against an opponent from a lower division. Just as surprising as the number of goals was the identity of the scorers — defensive-minded veterans Alan Stubbs and Lee Carsley along 18 year-old forwards Victor Anichebe and James Vaughn. Between the four of them, they had a total of only three goals this year coming into the match.
Vaughn is a good story. Two years ago, he replaced Wayne Rooney as both the youngest ever to play and to score for Everton. However, he missed all of last season with a horrific leg injury. Returning to regular play only recently, his form has been outstanding and yesterday he delivered a man-of-the-match performance.
Vaughn and Anichebe should give us the depth we will need next year if we’re fortunate enough to be playing European matches on top of the regular schedule. And with luck, they both could be stars for us before long.
