Something nagged at the back of my mind all afternoon. I did a post this morning on the growing dominance of radical Muslim clerics in British mosques, in which I quoted a reference to the fact that the radicals’ seminary “outlaws art, television, music and chess.” I understand the evils of art, television and music, but haven’t Muslims been playing chess for centuries? What on earth could these people have against chess?
It came to me in a flash on my way home from work: in chess, the queen is the most powerful piece on the board! The game offends the clerics’ sense of male superiority. That’s got to be it, don’t you think?
UPDATE: I’m still waiting, by the way, for Paul’s observations on the British clerics’ claim that “football is a cancer that has infected our youth.”
