Chris Cillizza reports that Republican Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico will not run for re-election next year. According to Cillizza, until recently it looked like the popular Domenici would defend his seat.
The Republicans have two solid potential candidates to replace Domenici — Reps. Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce. However, I wouldn’t bet against a Democratic pick-up here. In fact, if Bill Richardson were to run for the Senate, the Dems would almost certainly gain the seat. However, for now the word from Richardson’s camp is that he’s not interested.
As a footnote, David “Legend in his Own Mind” Iglesias apparently claims that Domenici is stepping down because of questions about the Senator’s role in Iglesias’s ouster from the U.S. Attorney post. It’s not clear how Iglesias, who got the job thanks to Domenici, knows that this is the explanation. Domenici has battled health problems and is one of several popular Republican incumbents who is stepping down.
