We were invited by Liz Mair to participate this morning on a conference call “focus[ing] on a major news item pertinent to 2010 races that I am confident you…will want to write on, as a top priority.” In the event, the call was with Minnesota Governor Tim Pawelenty, who announced the establishment of his new Freedom First PAC.
Also on the call with Governor Pawlenty was Hot Air‘s Ed Morrissey, who I am sure will have a good report up shortly. In the meantime, Jonathan Martin capably reads the tea leaves.
Governor Pawlenty stated that he would use the PAC to advocate principles and candidates supporting limited government. He spoke at some length about the popular resistance to the Obama domestic and foreign policy agenda. Obama’s election, he said, raised the question whether the country had made a leftward lurch. He thought that the popular resistance to Obama’s agenda evidenced in the tea parties and elsewhere answered that question in the negative. He said that the United States remains a center-right country.
In his opening comments, Governor Pawlenty made the point that tyranny comes in many forms. He suggested that creeping bureaucracy posed a threat to freedom in the United States. It sounded like he might even be reading Paul Rahe’s Soft Despotism. It’s the perfect book for his new PAC.
UPDATE: Ed’s report on the call is here. Jim Geraghty was on a subsequent call this morning and has posted his take here.
