Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-Ind.) has announced that he will vote for Obamacare. Ellsworth also voted “yes” the last time around, but as a member of the Stupak coalition. So Pelosi’s success in peeling him away from that coalition is a big deal. But then, perhaps Pelosi has cut some kind of a deal with that coalition. That would be a bigger deal.
There’s another way of looking at the Ellsworth vote. He will be the Democrats’ nominee for Senator this year. Voting for Obamacare probably dooms his chance of winning in November. Thus, he may have been at the top of the list of Dems Pelosi was willing to see vote “no.” Under this scenario, his “yes” vote would mean that Pelosi has no votes to spare.
We’ll see.
