Christopher Morris and Timothy Carney, for National Review Online, follow the money in attempting to discern where the alleged Hispanic opposition to Miguel Estrada is coming from. They note that, contrary to what the Democrats say, opposition is not coming from grassroots, member-supported Hispanic organizations. Rather, it is coming from Hispanic organizations with no members. In essence, it is coming from “a handful of liberal lawyers who rely on a few left-wing deep pockets” (the Ford Foundation, the Carnegie Corpporation, the Fannie Mae Foundation). These deep pockets in turn “have bamboozled big companies ” (AT&T, Verizon, Coca-Cola, Allstate Insurance, British Petroleum, Bank of America, WalMart, etc) out of millions of dollars. By contrast, according to Morris and Carney, the mainstream Hispanic organizations, the ones with real members, have all come out in favor of Estrada.
