It looks like Dan Rather got off easy

Dan Rather’s lawsuit against CBS is, oddly enough, still in court, and CBS’s document production has produced some interesting tidbits. According to this report, documents show that, with the idea of preempting allegations of a cover-up, CBS thought about putting its “harshest conservative critics” on the panel that would investigate Rather’s bogus story about President Bush’s national guard service. Among those mentioned were Rush Limbaugh, Matt Drudge, and Ann Coulter.

Another document showed that Scott and John were not considered because CBS deemed them too extreme. “Let’s not carry a good joke too far,” wrote one senior CBS executive.

In the end, of course, the investigation was handled by two establishment figures, former Attorney General Richard Thornburgh and former AP head Louis Boccardi.

Note: The second paragraph is a joke.
