The piece from Natan Sharansky posted by Trunk below contains a few nuggets. One is this quotation from Martin Luther King, with which I am not familiar:
“You declare, my friend, that you do not hate the Jews, you are merely ‘anti-Zionist.’ And I say, let the truth ring forth from the high mountain tops, let it echo through the valleys of God’s green earth; when people criticize Zionism they mean Jews — this is God’s own truth.”
A second is this anecdote, “possibly apocryphal,” involving Jean-Paul Sartre:
“Before the [1967] war, as Israel lay diplomatically isolated and Arab leaders were already trumpeting its certain demise, the famous French philosopher signed a statement in support of the Jewish state. After the war, he reproached the man who had solicited his signature: ‘But you assured me they would lose.'”
BIG TRUNK adds: Reader Lloyd Calmenson has kindly forwarded us this cautionary note about the inauthentic “Letter to an Anti-Zionist Friend,” the source of the alleged King quotation above. A similar statement of King’s, though lacking citation of God as the authority, is apparently authentic: “When people criticize Zionists they mean Jews, you are talking anti-Semitism.”
