Charles Krauthammer on the now-discredited museum “quaqmire” charge. Krauthammer argues that the left’s current charge of WMD-hyping is “nothing more than the Iraqi museum story Part II.” He views both as “a way for opponents of the war — deeply embarrassed by the mass graves, torture chambers and grotesque palaces discovered after the war — to change the subject and relieve themselves of the shame of having opposed the liberation of 25 million people.”
Krauthammer is the psychiatrist, but he may be over-estimating the left’s capacity to feel shame. As I argued the other day, I think that the phony charges are, at root, a rear-guard effort by the left to convince Americans that their government cannot be trusted to do good abroad or to tell the truth about its foreign adventures.
