I’m the first to admit that a lot happens in the Middle East that I don’t understand, but I cannot fathom why Israel announced that it intended to expel Arafat. If it had actually gotten rid of him, fine; but once the Israelis said they were planning to do it, the streets immediately filled with Palestinians. As long as they keep some Palestinians around Arafat’s office, making sure to include plenty of women and children, there is no way the Israelis can get at him. I just don’t get it.
