…comes from this Gallup Poll, released yesterday. Gallup asked respondents to rank various issues as “critical threats,” as opposed to “important, but not critical” or “not a threat.” Eighty-two percent ranked international terrorism a critical threat; 75% said the spread of weapons of mass destruction to unfriendly powers is a critical threat.
These data suggest that, notwithstanding the fact that poll respondents now consistently say that economic concerns outweigh foreign policy issues, there is a national security threshold test, related to the war on terror, that any presidential candidate will have to pass.
