Zapatero Loses No Time

Denouncing the United States and President Bush. Here is what the Spanish Prime Minister-elect had to say in virtually his first public utterance following the election:

You can’t bomb a people over a perceived threat…You can’t organise a war on the basis of lies. Wars such as that which has occurred in Iraq only allow hatred, violence and terror to proliferate.

Of course, Zapatero is by no means out of step with most of the EU hierarchy. The head of the EU’s executive, European Commission chief Romano Prodi, added in an interview yesterday:

It is clear that using force is not the answer to resolving the conflict with terrorists. Terrorism is infinitely more powerful than a year ago.

No word, of course, on what other than “force” might be the key to “resolving the conflict with terrorists.” Really, considering that the conflict is between our desire to live and their desire to kill us, the candidates for a means of “resolving the conflict” are limited.
