A Republican legislator in Montana has changed parties, delivering control of that state’s Senate to the Democrats, who already had won control of the House. (No doubt he will be hailed for his courage and independence, rather than being reviled for having deceived the voters who elected him.) When Democrats take control of legislatures in formerly red states like Montana and Colorado, it’s a very bad thing.
I’m not sure whether this is because 1) some red state voters are becoming more liberal, 2) Democrats in conservative states have moved to the center to make themselves more palatable to voters, or 3) without really changing their positions on key issues, Democrats have been able to project a more conservative image. I suspect the answer is “all of the above.” In any event the Republicans will be playing defense on a great many fronts for the next two years, at least.
