Yesterday Paul and John contemplated Jimmy Carter’s deep-seated antipathy to Israel. My view is that the case of Israel is special in Carter’s twisted universe. My sense is that Carter’s hatred of Israel derives from his disdain of Jewry and is additive to Carter’s unfailing tropism toward America’s most profound enemies. Carter’s virulence toward Israel seems to have a special resonance, thought his syndrome is otherwise endemic to what Ronald Radosh has dubbed the leftover left.
Now comes Neal Sher, former head of the Justice Department’s Office of Special Investigations (Nazi hunters), who had one brief encounter with Jimmy Carter. It is an encounter that sheds some light on the wellspring of Carter’s words and deeds in the case of Israel. Sher’s invaluable recollection, posted by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (which may require registration), is “In hindsight, Carter book seems part of an awkward pattern.” (Thanks to reader William Katz.)
UPDATE: A reader notes that Sher was disbarred as a result of misappropriation of funds from the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims, where he served as its chief of staff. His testimony should of course be weighed in the context of his record.
