Are Democrats nervous about the elections coming later this year? Will the prospect of those elections dim their ardor to ram Obamacare through?
Andrew McCarthy thinks “our side is analyzing this all wrong.” He writes: “Today’s Democrats are controlled by the radical Left, and it is more important to them to execute the permanent transformation of American society than it is to win the upcoming election cycles. They have already factored in losing in November — even losing big. For them, winning big now outweighs that. I think they’re right.” He has more here, all of it worth worrying over as Democrats make their renewed push to nationalize the health care system in the name of reform.
UPDATE: A reader comments: “While I completely agree with McCarthy’s analysis, I believe there is an additional twist to the situation. From their point of view, the Democrats have the problem of the ‘discouragement’ of their Left voters; i.e., the green line in Rasmussen’s chart.”
Are Democratic leaders calculating that they can “remoralize” their voters with a final push? Our reader speculates that “If [Democratic] people remain disaffected, they won’t be enthusiastic in November and will make a bad situation for the Democrats even worse. So ramming the health care bill through not only achieves Rasmussen’s thesis, but might also help to limit their losses in November. The question will be if conservatives can concomitantly drive up the red line in Rasmussen’s chart.” I’m not sure that Rasmussen has a “thesis” beyond the data, but the point of these comments remains.
