Happy Friday

Reid Wilson at Hotline says a prominent Democratic pollster is circulating a survey that shows George W. Bush is 6 points more popular than President Obama in “Frontline” districts. Frontline districts are ones held by Democrats that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sees as most vulnerable to Republican takeover. Wilson’s report put a smile on my face both for what it says about the past and what it says about »

Rauf on the road

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is of course the man who seeks to plant a Muslim victory monument at Ground Zero as a venture in interfaith understanding, or something. Unbelievably, the State Department has found Rauf an appropriate spokesman for the United States in the Middle East. I’ve nominated Andrew McCarthy to take Rauf’s place. Andy advises that he remains available, but that no phone call from Hillary Clinton has been »

Early Warning: A word from Michael Walsh

Michael Walsh is the editor of Andrew Breitbart’s Big Journalism site. He is also a notable writer in his own right. This week sees the publication of his new book Early Warning. I thought the book would be of interest to many Power Line readers and invited Michael to write something for us about it. He has graciously responded with the following column: My new thriller, Early Warning, is out »

Another go at Blago?

The Washington Post’s editorial board says that Patrick Fitzgerald should back off his vow to retry Rod Blagojevich. The Post acknowledges that the vote on the key Senate seat-selling charge was 11-1 to convict, but it argues that “almost isn’t good enough.” Some conservatives, perhaps animated by their unhappiness with Fitzgerald’s successful prosecution of Scooter Libby, agree with the Post. But I don’t see why Fitzgerald shouldn’t seriously consider a »

More on the Muslim Thing

There has been lots of consternation in the press about the misapprehension that Barak Obama is a Muslim. I wrote about those poll data here. Several left-wing sites “paraphrased” my observations and then, in typical fashion, attacked their own words rather than anything I actually said. Byron York, meanwhile, argues that “Obama has himself to blame for Muslim problem.” Byron takes us down memory lane: The question did not come »

Unexpected!

Glenn Reynolds has humorously documented the seemingly-endless parade of bad economic news, which time after time is described in the press as “unexpected.” Apparently it is always a surprise when left-wing economic policies don’t work. It happened again today, with the announcement that new unemployment claims rose to a nine-month high of 500,000. This is one of hundreds of news stories that called the bad news “unexpected.” The Hill supplies »

Which way in Washington? Part Two

On Tuesday, political observers received a preview of one of the most closely watched Senate contests of the 2010 season – the Washington Senate race between incumbent Democrat Patty Murray and Republican challenger Dino Rossi. Because of the way Washington operates its primaries, Murray and Rossi ran essentially head-to-head, along with a bunch of other Republicans, most notably Tea Party favorite Clint Didier. With all the votes counted (I think), »

More than a mosque, indeed

Those who support the building of a mosque at Ground Zero have offered a number of arguments in favor of doing so. The original rationale — that the mosque and related facilities would promote healing and interfaith cooperation – was always suspect. It collapsed entirely once it became clear that many Americans see the construction of a mosque at this location — where the landing gear from one of the »

Why can’t we be more like the French?

There’s an interesting soccer match in Paris tonight. Paris Saint-Gemain (PSG) takes on Macabi Tel-Aviv for a spot in the EUFA Europa League — the second level European club competition. PSG is known for the violent and fascist tendencies of its supporters and there has been trouble before when Israeli teams have visited. In 2006, PSG fans chased a fan of Hapoel Tel Aviv, shouting anti-semitic slogans. A plainclothes police »

The Pelosi Zone

When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for an investigation of the funding behind the opposition to the Ground Zero Mosque, this is what she had to say (video below): “There is no question there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some. And I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded, How is this being ginned »

Who Is He, Anyway?

Barack Obama is a polarizing and sometimes puzzling figure. It is no shock that many Americans don’t know what to make of him. My own explanation is that voters weren’t ready for a post-American presidency. Some, though, speculate in different channels. The Pew poll, as reported by the Associated Press, finds confusion about Obama’s most basic beliefs: Americans increasingly are convinced — incorrectly — that President Barack Obama is a »

Kiss of Death

Headline: “White House: Obama has ‘fully embraced Kendrick Meek’ in Florida Senate race.” So the rumors are true. The Democrats are quietly getting behind Charlie Crist as their only chance to stop Marco Rubio. »

In search of lost leftists — Kilroy was there

In the film clip below, from 1993, a pretentious leftist French film maker takes a “sentimental journey” back to the U.S. to catch up with, and pay homage to, the “dissidents” on the American left. One of these dissidents turns out to be Mary Jo Kilroy, now a Congresswoman from Ohio. Kilroy explains that the “left” needs to push its views “out of our own circle,” and that she is »

A speaker, not a listener

These can’t be easy times for Speaker Nancy Pelosi. But even the prospect of a crushing defeat in November, and the related recriminations from within her caucus (which probably have already commenced), can’t explain her call for an investigation regarding protests against the building of the Ground Zero Mosque. To believe that opposition to the construction of the mosque at Ground Zero has been “ginned up” requires a level of »

Speaker Pelosi, I confess

This past August, the White House invited loyal citizens to report when they received “an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy” to the official e-mail address [email protected]. Loyal citizens were to report fishy comments to Linda Douglass, someone who looks suspiciously like Krupskaya, or Nurse Ratched, and lived up to the image. This August it’s House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who has cast »
