Daniel Lowenstein is Director of the Center for the LIberal Arts and Free Institutions at UCLA and professor of law emeritus at the UCLA School of Law. He writes to point out, as Michael Barone has observed, that the GOP primary vote this year beats that of the Democrats. Professor Lowenstein directs us to an article with the findings of Curtis Gans that this is the case for the first time in mid-term primaries since 1930. The Republican margin, incidentally, is substantial.
Professor Lowenstein comments: “I am personally skeptical of comparative voter participation in the parties’ primaries as an indicator for the general election. But this is a pretty dramatic turnaround and it surely is not GOOD news for the Democrats.”
