Anyone who has ever made home movies–I plead guilty–is familiar with the fear that anyone who sees them, especially anyone outside the immediate family, will consider them to be excruciatingly boring. With good reason: they generally are.
But has anyone ever seen a movie that consists of the “star” watching himself on television? I doubt it. This Osama bin Laden video that was released today represents a hitherto-unknown level of self-absorption. One doubts that even Barack Obama, say, would have a minion film him watching himself on TV. Infinite regression threatens.
Of course, if you don’t leave the house for five years, your videos are doomed to be dull. And, BTW, has anyone else pointed out that bin Laden looks a lot like Fidel Castro in this film? That’s fitting, actually.
