Socialism: Not What It Used To Be!

The story of Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s arrest on sexual assault charges is interesting on a couple of levels beyond the prurient. My own first reaction was: why in the world is the head of the International Monetary Fund a socialist? But that probably just shows how far beyond the times I am.
The details of the story have a consistent theme: socialism evidently isn’t what it once was.

The trouble began at around 1 p.m. yesterday when a 32-year-old housekeeper entered Strauss-Kahn’s $3,000-a-night suite at the luxury Sofitel on West 44th Street….

$3,000 a night–not for a family or an entourage, but for a single socialist! Not bad.

Soon afterward, Strauss-Kahn got dressed and headed off to JFK for a flight to Paris. …
Two law-enforcement sources said Strauss-Kahn was trying to flee authorities. Police said he left his cellphone and other personal items in the room.
Strauss-Kahn, who had a meeting planned for today with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, has an arrangement with Air France that allows him to get on any flight and sit in first class, the sources said. He was traveling alone.

Nice arrangement! Obviously socialists have reconciled themselves to bourgeois comforts like first-class air travel. Any time you want, for free.

The shocking arrest came hours after a Socialist Party ally of Strauss-Kahn accused Sarkozy of kicking off a smear campaign against his longtime rival — focusing on his lavish lifestyle….

Where are socialists most vulnerable? Sure, it’s their lavish lifestyles! But then there is this: what is the ultimate evidence of how over-the-top luxurious Strauss-Kahn’s tastes are?

…including his preference for suits from the same tailor favored by President Obama.

There you have it. A skeptic might say that American liberals aren’t what they once were, either.
