It’s Heating Up In Minnesota

Not the weather, of course, but the presidential campaign. Republicans are excited about a recent Minnesota Poll showing Romney within the margin of error in Minnesota, and private polling has gotten essentially the same result. So the Romney campaign has gone live in Minnesota with television advertising, and the Obama campaign has responded in kind. Now the Romney campaign is talking about having either Romney or Ryan visit Minnesota in the next week.

The Democrats angrily deny that Minnesota is in play:

“The Romney campaign wants you to think it’s expanding the map but it’s not,” said Jim Messina, President Barack Obama’s campaign manager. “Romney is pretending he’s got a shot in states like in Pennsylvania and Minnesota. We expect the Romney campaign to visit an out of play state this week to pretend like they have some momentum there.”

David Axelrod had a somewhat different message in a conference call with reporters:

Obama campaign senior advisor David Axelrod said the Obama campaign is running ads in Minnesota because the Romney campaign began advertising in the state.

“We are not going to surrender any territory,” he said on a conference call with reporters.

Actions, as they say, speak louder than words: the Democrats have announced that Bill Clinton is coming to Minnesota next week and will make campaign stops at both the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota in Duluth. But maybe Clinton is only pretending to campaign.
