Not going to Disney World (Updated)

“Barack Obama, you just won a second term. What are you doing next?

“I’m going to Istanbul!”

Michael Rubin comments:

Today, Frank Ricciardone, the U.S. ambassador to Turkey, announced that Obama’s first trip of his second term will be to Turkey, a country which has witnessed under its increasingly Islamist government an unprecedented roll back of basic freedoms. The Turks are looking at Obama’s choice as an endorsement. They are probably right. On top of this, Ricciardone’s announcement comes right after Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that he would soon travel to Gaza, in recognition and support of Hamas.

Let’s take a look back on a happier time, when quarterback Phil Simms became the first to respond to the famous question after the New York Giants won Super Bowl XXI in January 1987.

UPDATE: Obama may not be going either to Istanbul or Disney World. In an email this morning, Michael Rubin notes that “it looks like Ricciardone is walking back his earlier statement–i hadn’t misread [the Turkish news report linked in his post]; they changed the story.” The current story reported by the Turkish news is here.
