Jon Ossoff is the great left hope in the special election to replace HHS Secretary Tom Price in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District. It’s a suburban district that has long sent Republicans to Congress. A plethora of Republicans is vying in today’s special election. Democrats have one Jon Ossoff — a 30-year-old former congressional aide and filmmaker still searching for his mission in life — and are excited about his prospects.
If Ossoff were to secure more than 50 percent of the vote in today’s special election, he would emerge as the winner without further ado. Republicans need to turn out and vote for one of the Republican candidates to keep Ossoff under 50 percent and proceed to a runoff election in June.
The always important Hollywood angle reminds us why we do not want the crowd supporting Ossoff to be encouraged, but I doubt you needed to be reminded on that score. “The end of democracy looks nigh. I think we all realize we can’t sit back, we can’t take things for granted. We can’t sit back and hope that somebody else does something, we have to do whatever we can, [so] we all gotta get woke, and that’s the mandate,” actor John Leguizamo told Politico’s Gabriel Debenedetti. “I wish there were more outspoken celebrities, athletes, artists, people with high profiles.” That’s one of the many differences we have with Leguizamo.
Debenedetti cruelly notes that we have this going for us: “Comedian Chelsea Handler…encouraged Georgians to vote for Ossoff last week, though she got the date of the election wrong.”
Herewith a plea to Sixth District Republicans: please take the time to vote for one of the Republican candidates today — one of the Republican candidates other than this guy.
Here is the AJC’s guide to the leading candidates. FiveThirtyEight has just posed everything you need to know about the special election. FiveThirtyEight omits this important point. If Ossoff were to win today, Democrats and their media adjunct won’t let us stop hearing about it.
UPDATE: You’d think that with the attention devoted to this race we would have learned before today that Ossoff isn’t even a resident of the district.
