We’ve been following the story of St. John’s University (Collegeville, Minnesota) football coach John Gagliardi. A week ago yesterday Coach Gagliardi tied Eddie Robinson’s record as the winningest coach in college football history as his team defeated the University of St. Thomas Tommies. Yesterday, Coach Gagliardi overtook Eddie Robinson’s record with victory 409, as his team came from behind to beat the previously undefeated team from Bethel College for the MIAC championship. The photograph below shows Coach Gagliardi surrounded by his team following the game. (It was a bitterly cold day to be playing outdoors.)
The Minneapolis Star Tribune’s account of the game and the ceremonies that took place to honor Coach Gagliardi’s achievement following the game is “Gagliardi sets record for coaching victories.” Star Tribune sports columnist Patrick Reusse also covered the game and provides his own angle in “Gagliardi gets record in style.”
