One of my daughters asks, are Robert Lees across the country scrambling to change their names, lest they be discriminated against by their employers? Is Robert the new Adolf?
I say, Yes! And it’s only right. But why stop there? Think how many Thomas Jacksons and James Stuarts there are in the U.S. Why shouldn’t they be discriminated against, too?
This whole thing with statues and names could be a lot of fun. As others have pointed out, Coca-Cola was invented by John S. Pemberton, who was a lieutenant colonel in the Third Georgia Cavalry Battalion during the Civil War. No more Diet Coke for you liberals!
On a more serious note, the University of Ghana is removing a statue of Mahatma Gandhi from the university’s grounds because Gandhi was a racist. I think he was an anti-Semite, too. In any event, all memorials to Gandhi in the U.S. should come down. And Netflix should delete that hagiographic movie from its catalog, too.
And, of course, the Democratic Party has to go. The party that tirelessly defended slavery, refused to accept defeat after the Civil War, employed the Ku Klux Klan as its militant arm, and enforced segregation for nearly a century after the war ended, should disband in shame. Many of its leading politicians–former Klansman Robert Byrd, William Fulbright (no more Fulbright scholarships), Richard Russell (we have to rename the Russell Senate Office Building), Sam Ervin, and many more–were proud racists and segregationists. Such a party should no longer be permitted to exist.
And this is only the beginning! Pulling down statues and renaming buildings, etc., could be a lot of fun for those of us who are not Democrats.
STEVE adds: Pity poor Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee. What will she ever do about her name, which is a two-fer!
P.S. In re; ESPN’s sensitivity: can we please find a Confederate general named “Brent Musburger”?
