Biden abides

Yesterday I predicted that Barack Obama would dump Joe Biden from the ticket if his internal polling showed that it would help him in the general election. It only took one news cycle for my supposition to be undermined, as the White House announced that the Dude abides.

Perhaps the internal polling shows no bounce from possible replacements for Biden. Perhaps the Dude is performing his assigned tasks capably as directed and all is going according to plan. Perhaps Ms. Hillary declined the honor of running with “the amateur.” Perhaps Obama is keeping his options open.

In any event, developments yesterday gave me one more occasion to reflect on George Eliot’s observation in the omniscient narrative voice of Middlemarch: “Among all forms of mistake, prophecy is the most gratuitous.”
