Today’s Washington Post reports on John McCain’s stomy relationships with some of his fellow Republican Senators. Former Sen. Santorum provides this quote: “If you work in the Senate for a while, you have a McCain story. . .He hasn’t built up a lot of goodwill.”
Actually, you could almost replace the phrase “work in the Senate” with “live in Washington.” If I were to host a large party of friends — not public figures or journalists I’ve met through Power Lilne, just regular friends — three of them would have first-hand stories about McCain becoming highly upset over some perceived slight. Two of the three would say they were the victims of a McCain grudge.
At the same, all three would say they respect McCain and at most only one would profess dislike for him. That’s part of the paradox of John McCain.
